Organized transports of companion animals from Ukraine to Slovakia during an exceptional situation
State Veterinary and Food Administration of the Slovak Republic, taking into account the decision of other Member States and to reduce the risk of introduction of rabies into the territory of Slovakia, does not allow entry of companion animals (dogs/cats/ferrets) with unknown health status (stray animals and animals from shelters / quarantine stations) from Ukraine to the territory of the Slovak Republic, which do not meet the conditions for commercial entry of companion animals from third countries into the EU under applicable legislation.
Currently, no Member State that does not have a direct border with Ukraine allows such consignments of animals to enter their territory, and therefore the SVFA SR does not allow the transit movement of such animals across the Slovak-Ukrainian borders.
The Slovak Republic is a rabies-free country, which is a zoonosis with fatal consequences for humans and animals, and therefore it is necessary to protect human health and prevent the possible introduction of human-borne diseases into the Slovak Republic even in this extremely tense time.
The conditions for the entry of companion animals of commercial movements from a third country into the EU can be found on the European Commission's website here.
